You Have Not Been Resting. You Have Been Recovering.

What the neuroscience of sustained high performance reveals about what your body has actually been doing while you thought you were relaxing.

You have taken the holiday. You have blocked the calendar. You have sat on the couch with the television on and told yourself this counts as rest.

And still, by Monday, something in you is already bracing again.

This is not a discipline problem. It is not a mindset problem. It is not evidence that you are doing self-care incorrectly. What you have been calling rest and what your body has actually been doing are two different physiological events, and the gap between them explains a great deal about why so many capable women reach the top of what they built only to find that arriving there did not feel the way they expected.

What Your Nervous System Has Actually Been Doing

The concept of allostatic load, developed by Sterling and Eyer and formalised by McEwen and Gianaros (2010), describes the cumulative wear that accumulates in the body when the stress response system is activated repeatedly over time, whether by genuine crisis or by the ordinary demands of sustained achievement. Allostasis itself is adaptive. Your body is meant to mobilise resources, meet a challenge, and then return to baseline. The difficulty begins when the return to baseline stops happening, because the demands never fully stop, or because the nervous system has learned that staying alert is safer than standing down.

Research on allostatic load has found that markers such as blood pressure, cardiac reactivity, and heart rate variability shift measurably under sustained pressure, even in people who report feeling calm (McEwen & Gianaros, 2010). Heart rate variability, a widely used indicator of the balance between activation and recovery in the autonomic nervous system, tends to decline as allostatic load accumulates, which reflects a reduced capacity for the nervous system to move flexibly between states. This is a physiological finding, not a psychological one. It does not require you to have done anything wrong. It requires only that you have been under sustained load for long enough that the system adapted to expect more load.

This is why passive rest so often fails to produce the relief it promises. Watching television, scrolling, or sleeping slightly more can reduce the external demands on you without addressing the internal set point your stress response has adopted. The nervous system does not reset simply because the diary is empty for an afternoon. It requires a signal, delivered through the body, that safety is genuinely available now, not provisionally, not for the length of one holiday, but as an ongoing state it is permitted to return to.

Stephen Porges, whose polyvagal theory has become one of the most widely used frameworks in trauma-informed and somatic practice, describes the autonomic nervous system as organised into a hierarchy of states rather than a simple switch between activation and rest (Porges, 2011). In this model, a distinct branch of the vagus nerve, active only in mammals, supports a state of felt safety in which social connection, digestion, and genuine recovery become possible. Porges calls the body's continuous, largely unconscious scanning for cues of danger or safety neuroception. When neuroception detects sufficient safety, the nervous system can move into this recovery-capable state. When it does not, the body remains in some degree of readiness, regardless of what the calendar says.

It is worth noting, in the interest of accuracy rather than certainty, that specific elements of polyvagal theory, particularly its claims about the evolutionary hierarchy between different vagal pathways, have been challenged by other physiologists on methodological grounds (Grossman, 2023). The broader clinical observation that the nervous system organises itself into recognisable states of safety, mobilisation, and shutdown is widely used across somatic and trauma-informed practice, while the precise evolutionary mechanism Porges proposes remains an area of genuine scientific debate. Why This Falls Differently on Women Who Have Built Something Real

There is a specific pattern worth naming plainly, because naming it precisely is more useful than softening it. Research on burnout consistently finds that women report higher levels of emotional exhaustion than men in comparable roles, even where overall burnout rates are more evenly distributed than commonly assumed (Purvanova & Muros, 2010). Maslach and Leiter's foundational model describes burnout as a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and a diminished sense of accomplishment, arising from prolonged exposure to demands that outpace available resources (Maslach & Leiter, 2016).

For women who carry professional responsibility alongside domestic and relational labour, the resources available for genuine recovery are frequently narrower, not because of any deficit in capability, but because the demands on time and attention are structurally wider (Riyono & Rezki, 2022, as cited in the burnout literature). A 2024 study published in Sex Roles found that observers consistently underestimate women's fatigue relative to their self-reported experience, which means the people around a woman carrying a significant load are less likely to notice she needs to stand down, and she is more likely to have learned to override the signal herself (Stosic, as reported in Forbes, 2025). What Touch Actually Does

This is where the evidence becomes directly relevant to what happens on the table.

Multiple controlled studies have found that moderate pressure massage produces a measurable shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance, distinct from the response to light pressure touch (Diego & Field, as cited in Field, 2016). Mechanoreceptors in the skin and underlying tissue respond to sustained, rhythmic pressure by signalling the vagus nerve directly, which is one proposed mechanism by which structured bodywork produces physiological change rather than only a subjective sense of relaxation. Trials measuring cortisol before and after massage sessions have shown reductions in several studies, although a meta-analysis of single-session interventions found this effect was not consistent across all trials, while reductions in blood pressure and heart rate were more reliably observed (Field, 2016). It is a claim that touch is one of the more direct routes available to a body that has been running on vigilance for a long time, because it works through the nervous system rather than through willpower.

This is the physiological logic underneath Lomi Lomi. The traditional Hawaiian practice, which uses long, connected, full body strokes rather than the segmented technique common to many Western massage traditions, is built around continuity of contact. The nervous system does not need to guess where the next moment of pressure is coming from. It can, for the length of the session, stop scanning.

What This Means for You

You have spent years building precisely, thinking clearly, and delivering results that most people around you could not replicate. That same precision has almost certainly been applied, without your full awareness, to the project of appearing regulated even when you were not. This is not a flaw in your character. It is what capability looks like when it has not yet had a reliable place to stand down.

You are not behind. You have not failed to rest correctly. You are a woman who built something real, using a nervous system that adapted intelligently to sustained demand, and who is now standing at the point where that same intelligence can be redirected toward genuine recovery rather than continued vigilance. This is expansion, not repair. Nothing about the woman who built what you have built needs to be corrected. What she requires now is a body that has permission to include recovery as part of what capability actually looks like.

The Living Practice: The Five Minute Nervous System Check

Each morning, before you reach for your phone, take five minutes for the following sequence. It is designed to help you distinguish between a nervous system that is genuinely regulated and one that has simply learned to suppress its own signals.

Minute one. Remain lying down. Place one hand on your chest and one on your abdomen. Notice, without changing anything yet, which hand moves more as you breathe.

Minutes two and three. Lengthen your exhale so it becomes longer than your inhale, for example, a count of four in and a count of six out. This ratio is associated with increased activation of the vagal pathways involved in the relaxation response. Continue for two minutes.

Minute four. Ask yourself a single question and let the answer arrive without editing it. Does my body feel like it is resting, or does it feel like it is waiting?

Minute five. Name, in one sentence, what you notice. Not what you think you should notice. What is actually present.

Track this daily. Over several weeks, a pattern will emerge that tells you more about your actual nervous system state than any amount of scheduled time off. This is a starting observation practice, not a diagnostic tool, and it is not a substitute for professional support if what you notice is persistent distress.

Where You Stand Now

You have not been failing at rest. You have been recovering, imperfectly, inside a body that adapted to demand with real intelligence, and that is now ready to be shown, precisely and without urgency, what genuine recovery actually requires. That precision is available. It does not ask you to become someone new. It asks you to let the woman who already built all of this include her own nervous system in what she takes seriously.
